Enriching the Curriculum through Digital Arts (Animation)

The Empowering Arts Network are looking for artist/s or an arts organisation to work with at least 6 primary schools in the West Midlands – all members of the Education Central Multi Academy Trust (ECMAT) – to deliver a programme of high quality arts experiences based around enrichment of the curriculum through digital arts, particularly animation, leading towards a Celebration Event in Spring 2019.

Background:

The Empowering Arts Network is a partnership between Arts Connect and primary schools in the West Midlands which cover a very wide demographic range. The commission will involve up to two classes in each school, and the 6 schools are:

• Albert Bradbeer Primary Academy – Birmingham
• Fairway Primary Academy – Birmingham
• Featherstone Academy – Staffordshire
• Heathlands Academy – Birmingham
• Reaside Academy – Birmingham
• Woodhouse Academy – Birmingham
(There is the possibility that one, or two, more schools may join the network and if so there will be additional finances to cover this additional involvement)

The aim is, over time, to increase the impact of arts and creativity across the network. This is the second year of the Empowering Arts Network’s Arts Ambassador programme.

Enriching the Curriculum through Digital Arts (Animation)

The commission aims to build upon the digital art activity the schools have already carried out by focusing on animation, and developing it into a quality artistic experience with a higher profile end result. We are interested in the professional artists/arts organisation as a critical intermediary and role model, providing challenge and provocations to the team of teacher artists and child artists throughout the creative process, as well as in ensuring quality outcomes.

The network would like to include the following:

  • CPD at the start of the programme to ensure teachers are competent and confident using digital art hardware and software
  • At least 3 days (or equivalent) of workshops in each school
  • A Celebration Event in the form of a mini animation festival, through which nominated films are screened to a network-wide audience

The content of the animations will be decided in consultation with participating schools. It is expected that the artist/s will have access to IT technicians and iPads in each of the participating schools if required.
We would expect that the artist/arts organisation will take a lead on project managing the artistic programme in partnership with the Arts Ambassadors teachers in each school, working alongside with the Empowering Arts Network Lead teacher and Arts Connect’s Arts Ambassador Network Coordinator. It is also expected that each practical workshop will involve a debrief at the end of the session with class teachers, Arts Ambassador lead teacher for the school and artist/s, and a session report submitted to the Network Lead.
