The programme

Supported by Aspire to HE this programme of 5 CPD workshops has been developed by Arts Connect to work with Aspire to HE linked Schools and Secondary School and FE Art Teachers in Telford and the Black Country.

What is the purpose of these CPD workshops?

We know that young people experience inequality in the access they have to high quality, inclusive art education and progression opportunities into HE and beyond. Our discussions with local art teachers have highlighted that boys and young people representing the global majority face increased barriers to engagement and achievement in art. In response to this we have partnered with Aspire to HE to design a funded programme of art teacher CPD sessions that focus on diversity and representation in the art curriculum and engaging and inspiring boys through visual art.

What happens in a workshop?

Based in a Black Country art venue, each teacher CPD session is led by an established artist educator who will equip art teachers with new skills, knowledge and inspiration to build on the breadth and diversity of their curriculum, reflecting students’ educational needs, interests, lived experience and heritage.

How much do they cost?

The workshops are fully funded by Arts Connect and Aspire to HE, so places are free.

Where are they taking place?

They are taking place in The New Art Gallery Walsall; Wolverhampton Art Gallery and The Wolverhampton School of Art.

Further opportunities to deepen the learning with student workshops

To extend the learning and impact of the teacher CPD sessions, selected teachers will have the opportunity to work with an artist educator CPD lead to co-design two workshops that will take place with a group of their students. In the workshops the students will explore hands on making techniques, investigate how their ideas and identity can inspire art creation and build a deeper understanding of creative career pathways.
