4.30 – 5.45pm FREE CPD ILLUSTRATION WORKSHOP LED BY HELEN WHEELER
Helen Wheeler, Lecturer in Illustration will lead a CPD Workshop for Primary Teachers linking to the Roald Dahl Illustration competition. The workshop will introduce a number of illustration styles and techniques that can be applied in the classroom with pupils who will be encouraged to submit entries (6 per school) for the competition.
Helen is a lecturer in Illustration at Birmingham City University and has been a commercially successful artist for the last 12 years, her work being available in countless high street outlets. She has worked in-house for the UK’s leading greetings card manufacturer, UK Greetings, creating a wide spectrum of products, covering all elements from concept to final production. Clients include the BBC, Paperchase, Next, Waterstones, House of Fraser, Boots, WHSmith, The British Medical Journal, and 30 of the main UK charities including The National Trust and Save the Children Foundation.
Within her work as a freelance illustrator she has expanded her practice to character development for CBBC, a body of exhibition pieces motivated by her interest in figure, character, and narrative. Exploration and creation of artist books add another dimension and direction to her portfolio.
5.45 – 6.00pm ROALD DAHL ILLUSTRATION COMPETITION
As part of the Summer Artslink festival and linking to Helen’s workshop, we are opening a city – wide illustration competition for Primary children inspired by Roald Dahl’s work. Steve Ball will outline the rules and entry guidelines to attendees at this Artslink event (a competition PDF will be circulated soon across the schools network). Winning entries will be displayed at New Street Station, Birmingham Hippodrome, BCU Parkside and community libraries. Prizes include tickets for Matilda the Musical at Birmingham Hippodrome and Roald Dahl story books. Deadline for submission of applications is 29 June at 5 pm.
