The programme

Creativity in the Classroom – Art CPD for Teachers

We are delighted to introduce the second event in our new CPD programme with a fantastic workshop led by local artist and art educator Becki Emery.

Becki’s workshop, Enhance your creative teaching skills in the classroom by exploring the natural environment and climate change through art, with artist and educator Becki Emery, is the second in a series of practical CPD workshops for primary teachers that are part of our Creativity in the Classroom – Art CPD for Teachers programme.

Led by artists, academics and art practitioners, the workshops focus on learning new skills and techniques in the visual arts for you to take back to the classroom.

What will Becki’s workshop involve?

The session will begin with a guided tour of the ‘Earthbound’ exhibition at the New Art Gallery Walsall, where we will be introduced to a range of artists whose work is set within the context of global anxiety about the climate crisis and planetary health research, this major group exhibition presents existing and newly commissioned artworks by nine artists and community makers that highlight our connection with the earth and our potential to return to a more healthy and harmonious existence with the natural world. It emerges from the argument that, over time, natural and human histories have become so disconnected that we appear to have lost sight of the innate interconnectivity between human and natural life. We will explore how and why the artwork has been created and discuss ideas for how the exhibition can prompt discussions and idea forming with pupils.

Following the tour artist and art educator Becki Emery will lead a practical workshop where we will learn different ways to use recycled and natural materials to inspire creative activities in school.

Through the making process of the day Becki will also share ideas for approaching wellbeing and mindfulness with pupils and provide you with take-away strategies for engaging pupils in discussions about nature and the environment using creative approaches.

What will I learn on the day?

  • Explore issues of climate change and sustainability through creative themes and imaginative discussion.
  • Develop your art making skills using plastic-free, natural and recyclable materials, with ideas to take straight back to the classroom.
  • Be inspired by the work of artists who explore the natural environment, climate change and sustainability.
  • Take away practical strategies to optimise outdoor spaces at school through art and craft activities.
  • Learn new classroom ready, practical techniques to explore mindfulness and wellbeing with pupils.
